The Ultimate Home Impact Story: 25 Years in the Making

Twenty-five years ago, in 2001, our Managing Director, Sam Kapoulas, bought his first house – a renovation project in Leichhardt. Sam was in his 20s and acted more out of curiosity than as a business opportunity.

As it turned out, he sold for a profit and realised there was a real opportunity – he could keep doing this. That realisation evolved into a business, and that business is now Home Impact.

From those humble beginnings that have now spanned over a quarter of a century, our business has certainly made an impact: around 320 council approvals, 128 new homes built, and 250 homes extended.

With this in mind, we’re taking a moment to celebrate 25 years: where we started, how far we’ve come, and where we’re headed next.

Our Story: From a Flyer Drop in the Inner West to Home Impact

The business started life as Impact Design & Construct, but the real story starts even earlier — with Sam, a renovated house in Leichhardt, and a decision to try doing it again with a plan and a purpose.

The decision turned out to be the easy part – but with no clients and no leads, Sam did what any hands-on tradesperson would: he mocked up some flyers, took them to the local print shop, and had 5,000 printed. He hand-delivered them to letterboxes across the Inner West, hoping to get a response.

He didn’t have to wait long – not long after the first drop, his phone rang. He braced for a complaint about junk mail. Instead, it was someone asking if he’d come and look at renovating their home. Sam visited a few days later and walked away with his first project. And soon that first client’s friend became the second job, and from there, word of mouth did the rest.

Focusing on the Inner West wasn’t a random choice, either – the nature of the properties suited our skills and experience, and it helped that the area had always shown stronger growth than most. Twenty-five years on, those reasons are as valid as ever.

As for the name: We started with the Impact Design & Construct business name back in 2001. Over time, people kept saying the full name was a mouthful — hard to say, harder to search for online — while “Home Impact” was short, memorable, and said exactly what the business did: building homes, making an impact. Eventually, we made a call to formalise the shorter name.

The business grew from that first office in Dulwich Hill into a bigger office nearby and kept growing from there.

One project stands out as a real turning point: a set of duplexes in Rodd Point, right on the Bay Run. Construction stretched longer than planned, which meant Home Impact signage stayed up — visible to the thousands of people walking along the Bay Run every day — for months longer than usual. What could have been a headache turned into one of the biggest brand-awareness drivers in the company’s history. Along the way, the work continued to build, a referral here, a recommendation there. As we grew, our skills and capabilities did too, helping us make more dream homes come to life.

The People Behind the Impact

A business doesn’t reach 25 years on its own — it takes a team. Over the past quarter-century, Home Impact has grown from Sam working off a stack of flyers to a full team still led by Sam, bringing real trade skill and care to every project while keeping the same hands-on attitude that landed that very first recommendation.

Real Homes, Real Stories

Over 25 years, the true measure of Home Impact’s work isn’t in the number of projects completed — it’s in the homes and families behind them. Sometimes it’s the clients who come back years later to say the work has held up.

One client’s review captures it well. After their build:

“A very professional outfit to deal with. Great workmanship, reliable, and honest — I never felt they were trying to catch me out with variations, especially during the Covid lockdowns when so many other builders were struggling. A big thanks to the team, who put their hearts into our home and were always a pleasure to deal with. They always had helpful suggestions and worked tirelessly to make sure everything was finished in time for Christmas. Thanks to the whole team for making it happen.”

And a few years on, the same client came back with an update:

“It’s now been a few years since my original review, and I wanted to share an update. The quality has truly stood the test of time — we’ve had only very minor defects, and the response from Home Impact each time has been excellent. Reliable, responsive customer service. I keep hearing stories about builders who come and go, or simply vanish after handover — but these guys are a genuine beacon in the industry. Their reliability and real care, even years after completion, have been nothing short of impressive. It’s been easy to reach out for help or warranty checks, and they’ve always responded, no matter how small the ask. That continued care speaks directly to who they are, and it’s to be commended. I would use Home Impact again in a heartbeat.”

That’s the kind of relationship 25 years is really built on — not just the homes built, but showing up years later when someone needs a hand.

Our customers’ testimonials have inspired us along the way, and we have also picked up Local Business Awards and Houzz awards for design and service — a nice reflection of the quality of the business that started with 5,000 flyers and one phone call.

Looking Ahead: The Next 25 Years

Reaching a 25-year milestone is a moment to look back on with pride — but it’s just as much a moment to look forward. As Home Impact moves into its next chapter, the focus is on building smarter and more sustainably, bringing more energy-efficient design into every renovation and new build, and continuing to grow across the Inner West — all without losing the personal, hands-on approach, the attention to detail and the focus on quality that’s been there since that very first job.

One thing won’t change: the promise to treat every home like it matters, because it does.
